Why Every Angler Should Use a Landing Net

The primary benefits of using a landing net include higher catch success, increased angler safety, faster fish recovery, and the prevention of gear failure.

A landing net is more than just an accessory or an extra piece of fishing gear. It is an essential tool that helps anglers land fish safely, protect their equipment, and practice responsible catch-and-release fishing.

Whether you're fishing from the shore, a boat, or a kayak, using a landing net offers several important advantages. It increases your chances of successfully landing a fish, reduces the risk of injury, and helps minimize unnecessary stress and physical damage to your catch.

1. Prevents Lost Fish

One of the most frustrating moments in fishing is losing a fish just as you're about to land it. A fish can suddenly shake its head, throw the hook, or make one last powerful run. Using a landing net helps secure the fish at the water's edge, reducing the chances of losing it during those final moments.

2. Keeps the Angler Safe

Some fish have sharp teeth, sharp spines, or powerful movements that can make handling them dangerous. This becomes even more challenging when dealing with lures equipped with multiple treble hooks. A landing net helps control the fish and keeps it at a safer distance from your hands, reducing the risk of accidental hook injuries.

3. Protects Your Fishing Equipment

Trying to lift a heavy fish directly out of the water using only your fishing rod can put excessive pressure on your rod, line, and other tackle components. This practice, commonly known as boat flipping, can lead to broken rod tips, damaged equipment, or snapped fishing lines. A landing net provides additional support and allows you to bring the fish in without putting unnecessary strain on your setup.

4. Keeps Fish Submerged During Catch-and-Release

A landing net can also serve as a temporary holding space for your catch. Instead of leaving the fish exposed while preparing your camera, pliers, or other equipment, you can keep it submerged in the water.

This allows the fish to continue receiving oxygen through its gills while you prepare for a quick photo or hook removal. It also gives the fish an opportunity to recover before being released.

5. Minimizes Physical Damage to Fish

Responsible angling doesn't end when you successfully land a fish. How you handle it afterward matters just as much.

Dragging fish across rocks, placing them on hot boat surfaces, or gripping them too tightly can damage their protective slime coat, scales, and other delicate body structures. A properly sized landing net, preferably with soft, fish-friendly mesh, helps minimize unnecessary contact and physical trauma.

Fish Responsibly, Land Safely

At the end of the day, a landing net benefits both the angler and the fish. It helps secure your catch, protects your equipment, reduces the risk of injury, and makes catch-and-release practices more responsible.

Remember, the goal isn't just to catch fish. It's also about making sure they have the best possible chance of swimming away safely.
